Dear: The Right

Dear The Right,

After our recent meetings I’d like to bring up a few points, which I hope don’t offend you too much. The dinner we shared was lovely, it may be a last hurrah as I move predictably towards vegetarianism. A few points came up though, which if I’m totally honest I’d like you to mull over – you said that “Dialogue is no use, it stop you from getting anything done.” This may be correct, dialogue stops you from getting anything done. Your alternative of a benevolent dictator didn’t fill me with much hope or with a great deal of faith in your considerations. I appreciate things are lovely currently for you, but rest assured that this isn’t the case for everyone. And just because you’re not experiencing it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. I share your wish, in fact your reality, to live off the grid and do my own thing but I, like most others don’t have the means to do this. And while I agree that our media perpetuates one-sided, echo-chamber thinking – so does isolation.
I’m not sure if you’ve lost the ability to step back and recognize others, or, like a benevolent child, you never had it.
This leads me to the other meeting we had, that fabulous weekend in the capital. I have to say that I was shocked you thought that someone being destitute was as loathsome as someone living with decadent wealth. I think on this occasion you may have been reading and listening to the wrong people, I’m glad that I was able to offer you an alternative – that sometimes life can be hard. I accept that many of proposals for change were radical and may affect you more than they would me, but I did think you’d have something to add other than this. At least I had suggestions for a future? I’m sorry if I’m sounding bitter, I just reckon you ought to have some ideas other than what we currently have?
When you wrote this, I have to say I was truly dis-heartened. You seem to dis-prove your own thesis – academics no longer favour the neo-liberal agenda you so decry. They are the academics, their bias is an academic one and based on empirical truth where possible. You remember empirical truth don’t you? It used to be your best friend before we had all those ruddy depressions. Anyway, there seems to be a lot of young people who are in a different situation to you, I suppose it’s they’re fault? Or perhaps you worked harder than the rest?
I’m actually starting to think you and I have had our day. I’ll always listen to you but as it seems you can’t promise the same back, we ought to part ways. I don’t want to be dramatic or over the top, but it is too much. Your happy when things are working out for you, I didn’t think you were so superficial and selfish but I’ve had quite enough of the mindless agenda for growth and the beach ball headed xenophobic presidents and the closed-door machinations which sell war and won’t allow change. It’s silly, it’s stupid even. I think it’s time we had a change and I think it’s time you took a long hard look in the mirror.

Yours,

Mr Hummels.
